Scope of Practice

Massage and bodywork therapy practices are designed to promote and maintain the health and well-being of the client, but do not include the diagnosis of illness, disease, impairment or disability. We are trained to recognize dysfunctions of the musculoskeletal system, abnormalities of the skin, and symptoms of common health conditions so we may determine if massage is safely indicated or if we should refer you out to your general practitioner, dermatologist, orthopedist, physical therapist, or chiropractor.

Massage and Bodywork therapies are not appropriate or safe for those with certain medical conditions or symptoms because those contraindications present a risk for the client or therapist’s health. Medical clearance will be needed from your doctor following surgery or any major medical issue or diagnosis.

Local contraindications, such as varicose veins and open abrasions, may be safely avoided while you receive bodywork. Systemic contraindications, such as fever or infection, make massage unsafe because it can worsen the condition or spread disease.

The Goal

How often should you receive

massage and bodywork?

This usually depends on your activity and stress levels.

In general, a monthly massage is a great way to be proactive in maintaining your health and preventing pain and dysfunction.

If you lead a more active lifestyle, we recommend you receive bodywork every 2-3 weeks to help you recover faster and stay active longer.

When dealing with specific injury recovery, more frequent bodywork is ideal until the problem is resolved.

Symptoms from overuse or repetitive holding patterns tend to return if you continue the activity. We recommend you book about every three weeks, pay attention to how your body recovers, and adjust your treatment schedule to receive bodywork before the onset of pain or dysfunction.
